Moving can be stressful and overwhelming! One way to make it easier to stay organized during the move is to declutter your home first and donate your unwanted furniture, clothes, or food items to charity. It is a great way to help those that are in need and get rid of some of your old stuff without leaving your house.

Below is the list of charitable organizations that will pick up your furniture, clothes, food items, appliances, and more. Get to know each of them by going to their website and learning about their services and how you can arrange your free donation pick-up.

Who will do a free donation pick-up

The following organizations will pick up your donations for free. Check their website to get more details on their services in your area:

Move for Hunger

They are a non-profit organization that partners with local moving companies to reduce food waste and fight hunger. You can search their directory of movers in your area and find a local mover that will help deliver your unwanted nonperishable food items to your local food bank, free of charge. This is a great program that helps feed millions of Americans each year. Prepare your nonperishables and pack them in your designated Move For Hunger-labeled box. Your movers will then deliver it for free to the local food bank or local community in need.

The Salvation Army

A Christian organization that includes a network of churches, rehabilitation centers, homeless shelters, food pantries, children’s homes, women’s homes, and more. Some of the most common items donated are household goods, clothes, furniture, appliances, etc. Your donation to them is tax-deductible.

Goodwill

Your donation to Goodwill will enable them to help local community members to get the skills and the training needed for employment. The organization operates locally with multiple locations nationwide. You can donate new or gently used items and get a deduction on your taxes as well.

Habitat For Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps people in communities and around the world build or improve a place they can call home. Most commonly donated and accepted items are furniture, appliances, building materials, and other household items. All your donated items are then sold to the local community. All proceeds go to help families rebuild and preserve their homes.

Furniture Bank

The Furniture Bank is a network of furniture banks from across North America. With their network, you can connect with a local furniture donation company and arrange free pick-up. After that, your donations will be given to families and local communities in need.

Helpful Tips when donating:

When you move, you likely have many items you no longer use. Perhaps you are downsizing and simply do not have space for everything in your new home or office. Instead of throwing stuff out, you can help your local community and those in need. This also helps reduce food waste and recycle some items, which helps the environment. When scheduling your donation pick-up consider the following:

Do your research.

Check the website of the organization you wish to donate to. It is important to know about the cause and how your donation makes a difference. Not all items are accepted, so do some research before scheduling your pick-up.

Give yourself plenty of time.

Make sure you schedule your pick-up in advance. Some of these companies will pick up within 24 hours, and some only have certain days for pick-ups. To avoid any last-minute surprises, make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

Only donate the items worth donating.

Make sure everything is clean and functional. Do not donate dirty clothes or broken electronics. Be sure to wash your items and test your appliances before your scheduled pick-up.
