- Antique stores — Keep in mind that you’ll likely pay a marked-up price at an antique store as opposed to buying directly from the seller at an estate sale. But most are willing to negotiate on price, and you can save time if you’re looking for multiple pieces.
- Floor models at big box stores — You can sometimes score floor or display models of both furniture and appliances for discounted prices at popular big box stores. Similar to technology, you can also find deals on open box/returned items.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore — With locations across the country, Habitat for Humanity Restores sell furniture, appliances and home improvement items for a fraction of what you would pay in a retail store.
- Local thrift stores — If you’re looking for a great deal on used furniture, hit up your local Goodwill, Salvation Army or similar local thrift shop. The selection changes frequently and the prices tend to be the lowest you’ll find outside of a garage sale or online listing.
- Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace/OfferUp/Re-sell apps — With a number of re-sell apps out there that each boast their own unique features, local sellers are taking advantage of these virtual storefronts to sell big items like furniture and large appliances. Just be sure to keep safety top of mind, research public meeting places in your new neighborhood.
- Online surplus stores (e.g. Overstock, Wayfair, Amazon) — While these sites typically sell new items, you can still find excellent deals. Keep in mind that you’ll likely sacrifice a bit of quality for the low price, so you should be OK with that trade off.
